Fundamentals and Basics

Fundamentals and basics are always what athletes will revert back to during competition if it’s ingrained in them.

We tell our athletes that the ability to STOP is just as important as the ability to START.

In teaching our ‘Starting Progression” from a lateral square stance, we want athletes to:

1. Open/Crossover step (either is fine in competition as long as it’s a FAST step)

2. ‘Run with their eyes’ by using vision to get them to a specific spot

3. Think of “the first three steps FAST” as the most important steps

When it comes to deceleration and stopping we teach our athletes to:

1. Decelerate and stop laterally by drop hips

2. Learn to use vision to stop them at a specific place like next to a come.

3. Slow down and decelerate as close to where you are stopping as possible, abruptly, yet coming into balance.
