The Zen of Training: why exercise selection matters and doesn’t matter
I have always loved the variety in training. You can create an entire training session built around different exercises and drills, and never create the same program twice.
Exercises and drills vary according to the goal sought, and although each person is different, different exercise/drill selections affect people differently.
I have some clients who excel in footwork skills by using the agility ladder over a period of time, and others that get no benefit from an agility ladder whatsoever.
That’s why it is so important to keep an open mind regarding what you do in your training, understanding it IS the exercise that matter, but then again it’s really not.
I ultimately believe it comes down to not only the right combinations of exercises and drills, but more importantly the ability to perform them with great effort and intention. You cant just “do” exercise or workout if you want to become better, you have to TRAIN (the act of preparing for something!).
YES——exercise and drill selection matter, but work capacity and great effort matter more. The key is in selecting exercises that work towards the main goal which gives you the best opportunity to get better.
Exercises and Drills matter, but then again, they really don’t.
